About Facebook Pay

Facebook or Meta Pay is a relatively new product by the company that is available in many countries worldwide, and not only in the US.

You can use Facebook Pay to make payments on Facebook and Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and even WhatsApp (only in Brazil).

To enable Facebook Pay, all you have to do is add your payment card or account details once. You can use it to make purchases, send money or donate within the apps. It’s similar to Cash App, Venmo, and, yes Chime.

From the Facebook app or website, you can also find your payment history as well as manage payment methods and get help from customer support. Add your PIN or biometrics to help secure individual payments.

How to Send or Receive Money in Facebook messages?

Facebook has evolved a lot since its humble beginnings (for better or for worse, you be the judge). You can now use its Messenger to send and receive money in Facebook messages.

However, to do that, you have to add an accepted payment method to your FB account. Chime will work, of course.

To send money in FB messages:

  1. Log into Facebook
  2. Click or tap on Messenger or open the Messenger app
  3. Start a chat with a person
  4. Tap on the menu at the bottom of the chat
  5. Select “$”
  6. Enter the amount you want to send
  7. Tap “Pay”
  8. Click “Confirm [dollar amount] Payment”
  9. Enter PIN if needed to confirm your payment.

If you’re on the receiving end of the transfer, the cash is sent to you immediately if you’ve already set up a payment method.

However, your payment provider might take up to 3-5 business days to post the money to your account.

Why Are My Facebook Payments Failing?

There are certain requirements that have to be met in order for the payments to go through smoothly.

If your payment to a friend in a Facebook message isn’t going through, it may be because:

  • You or your friend don’t have a payment method linked to the account
  • You or your friend don’t live in the US
  • You or your friend aren’t at least 18 years old
  • Your friend declined the payment

If the requirements are met and you still can’t send the money, try contacting your card provider, in this case, Chime, or contact Facebook support to get to the bottom of the issue.

Why Are My Facebook Payments Canceled?

If your payment to a friend in a Facebook message was canceled, it may be because:

  • Your friend declined the payment
  • They have the same payment method as you
  • They haven’t accepted the payment
  • If they don’t accept the money after seven days, it’ll automatically cancel

Canceled payments will be refunded to your linked payment method in 5-7 business days.

Can You Cancel a Payment?

What if you already sent the money but you changed your mind and want to cancel the transfer? Is it possible?

Unfortunately, you can’t cancel a payment you previously sent in a Facebook message. The money is transferred straightaway when you set up a payment method.

If you send money to someone in a Facebook message by mistake, the process is the same as with other money management apps such as Cash App or Venmo. Your only options are to ask the recipient if they can:

  • Send the money back to you
  • Decline the payment (only if they don’t have a payment method linked)

Additionally, the payment is auto-canceled if the recipient doesn’t accept the payment after 7 days.

If the recipient sends the money back to you or declines your payment it usually takes up to 3-5 business days to see the money in your account again.

How Much Does it Cost to Send or Receive Money in Facebook Messages?

Sending and receiving money is free as there are no fees associated with money transfers in Facebook messages. As is the case with most Facebook features, this one is also free for everyone.

However, the availability depends on the country you live in. For instance, basically, all of Europe supports Facebook Pay but only EU countries support Instagram payments as well and none of them have WhatsApp and Messenger payments.

In the US, you can use all the features except WhatsApp payments which are only supported in Brazil.

Who Can Use Facebook Messenger For Money Transfers?

Facebook message payments and money transfers are only available in the United States and Thailand for some reason.

Here are the requirements that both you and the recipient have to meet to send and receive money in Facebook messages:

  • Live in the United States or Thailand
  • Be 18+ years old
  • Have an active Facebook account
  • Set your preferred currency to US dollars (or Thai baht in Thailand)
  • Have previously added a payment method to Facebook or Messenger

Chime’s Facebook Pay Alternative

If you’re a seasoned Chime user you’re probably already aware that you can use Chime to send money to anyone, whether they are also on Chime or not. It’s easy, it’s free, and it’s typically instantaneous. I prefer it to Facebook Pay any day.

Although transfers are generally immediate, there might be some delays. There’s likewise a $2,000 limit or 15 transfers per month.

How to Send Money

To send money with Pay Anyone means you have to find the person you want to send the money to or enter their $ChimeSign.

The recipient can have a Chime account but doesn’t have to. They also won’t have to open a Chime account to receive your money. As you can see, that’s much different from Facebook Pay where both parties have to have an active Facebook account.

So, to send money to people that don’t have Chime, enter their email address or phone number if they aren’t in your contacts or search your imported contacts if they are.

Once you’ve found them, enter the payment details, and optionally, add a GIF or emoji.

Finally, double-check all the details and tap “Pay” to conclude the money transfer. Chime users get the funds instantly. And non-members get an email or text with a link where they have to enter their debit card info to claim their cash in the next 14 days.

How to Receive Money

Chimers receive money from someone that was using Pay Anyone in their Chime checking account immediately and for free. There’s nothing to be done.

You can also request money from other Chimers. To request cash, all you have to do is:

  1. Log into your Chime app
  2. Tap “Pay Anyone”
  3. Search for the right person
  4. Enter the amount of money you want to receive
  5. Send your request

As we already mentioned, non-Chime members can also receive money. The recipient gets an email or a text with a link to Chime’s website.

All a recipient has to do is tap on the link to enter their debit card info on the Chime website.

However, there are many phishing scams going around. The recipient has to be careful not to click on a scammer’s link.

Conclusion

You can use Chime cards with Facebook Pay. All you need to do is add a card as a payment method and you can:

  • Transfer money to/from friends in Messenger
  • Buy and sell things on FB Marketplace and in FB groups
  • Buy tickets for events
  • Buy games and make in-app purchases
  • Make donations
  • Promote your products via Facebook Ads
  • Review your payment history
